Yoga is always something I’ve wanted to try. However I’ve never got around to attending a class because I was unsure of what type was right for a complete beginner like me…bikram, antigravity, vinyasa, power…the list goes on and makes taking the first step to trying yoga, a confusing one. Out of the blue, as if answering my unspoken cry, Bianca King invited me to try Beyond Yoga.
Situated all around the city, Beyond Yoga aims to “inspire you to go beyond the physical practice of Yoga and transcend into making it a way of life.” Which completely resonates with someone like me who leads a busy schedule but wants to carve out a bit of the day for some “me time” to reflect and focus.
Our instructor Al Galang answered all of our initial queries and guided us through an hour-long session of Hot Primary yoga. Described as “Bikram Yoga 2.0”, we transitioned through multiple calming, yet challenging exercises within a heated room.
As a newbie I was expecting a sauna-like environment and started kicking myself for wearing a thick t-shirt and long pants but thankfully, the heat was only elevated enough to cause a mild sweat.
Throughout the session I, along with my fellow classmates worked up quite a sweat, but it felt quite detoxifying in a way causing my body to feel warm and nimble. I was pleasantly surprised with my capability and flexibility throughout the class – just a small example to show that you should never assume your capabilities without giving it a try!
Afterwards, I felt amazing. Being sick at the time with a cold and sore sinus, throughout the whole session my runny nose ceased and my sinus cleared. Even though my flexibility and balance level is that of a beginner, the moves weren’t daunting or unachievable. Al guided every step through each pose, describing the perfect posture of each – so I experienced no injuries or pulled/overstretched muscles.
The result? I loved it. And am planning to make it a part of my weekly fitness routine alongside my strength training with weights. The day after, I woke up with slightly sore and tight feeling muscles but in a good way – like they had a good workout. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to integrate a calming, conditioning aspect into their active lifestyle.
